Even in those first quiet moments, you could already feel how important family was to Abbie. The house itself said so much about that. There were family photos on the walls, a lovely warm atmosphere indoors, and outside there was a huge garden that had clearly been looked after with real love and care by Abbie’s dad. Abbie and Alex’s Story
Abbie and Alex’s story started back in 2016 on a working holiday in Whistler, Canada, where they were both living and working in Four Seasons. They spent two years there together before moving back to Abbie’s hometown of Oxford. Alex, being Australian, then had the unforgettable joy of experiencing his first English winter.
They both love the outdoors, skiing, snowboarding, gardening and exploring the woods. They got engaged in 2020 after the first lockdown and have since bought their first home together. All of that made their wedding day feel even more personal, because so much of who they are as a couple could be seen in the setting they chose and the way the whole day was planned.

Once we arrived at the venue, the vibe was instantly brilliant. Matt and I were greeted by lots of smiling, friendly people, both young and older, and there was a warm, upbeat atmosphere straight away. A lot of guests had travelled over from Australia, which added another lovely layer to the day and made it feel even more special.
As always, one of the first things I did was photograph the details. I captured the ceremony area, the reception styling, the tables, the flowers and the wedding cake. And yes, the cake was definitely having a harder time with the heat than anyone else. It was leaning and slowly melting in the temperature like its own little summer drama, but to be fair to Abbie and Alex, they were so laid-back about it. It did not bother them at all, and that attitude really summed them up perfectly.

The ceremony was planned for 2pm, with the sun high in the sky and the heat absolutely full on. It was one of those days where you could feel the temperature in every step, but somehow the whole setting still looked incredible.
The ceremony itself took place outside, which suited the venue beautifully. The aisle was lined with gorgeous purple Verbena bonariensis, which gave the whole space a soft, summery and slightly wild garden feel. It was one of those details that made the setting look even more magical without feeling overdone.
This was a humanist-style ceremony, created and led by a friend of the couple rather than by a registrar or a religious celebrant. That made it feel even more personal. There were smiles, laughter and plenty of happy tears. Both of their sisters gave readings, and both Abbie and Alex had written their own personal vows. During those vows, I caught several guests quietly wiping away tears, and those are always the moments I love the most because they are completely real and impossible to fake.
Confetti, Group Photos and a Brilliant Wedding Party
After the ceremony, we went into confetti, which brought loads of laughter and some brilliant facial expressions as the confetti hit Abbie and Alex from every direction. It was one of those classic fun moments that always brings loads of energy into the gallery.
After that, we moved into family and group photos. As always, I wanted these to feel more natural and full of life rather than just people standing stiffly in lines. The wedding party made that very easy. On Alex’s side there were groomsmen and one groomswoman, and together with the bridesmaids they brought loads of personality and energy. At one point the girls were walking towards the camera singing at the top of their lungs, which made for some brilliant frames.
The children at the wedding also added so much to the day. They were clearly having the best time, making the most of the weather, the gardens and all the open space around them. At a venue like this, that playful energy just fits naturally.
Relaxed Candid Moments During Cocktail Hour
One thing I really liked about this day was how relaxed the timing felt. After the ceremony, there was plenty of space for genuine candid moments during the drinks reception, and nobody seemed rushed or pressured. That is something that can make a huge difference to the overall feel of a wedding day.
Some venues can be very strict with timings, but this day never felt like anyone was pushing people from one part to the next too aggressively. That gave everyone the chance to enjoy themselves properly, and it also gave me more room to capture the kind of natural interactions that tell the real story of the day.
Portraits in the Garden Before Dinner
Just before everyone sat down for the wedding breakfast, and before Abbie and Alex made their entrance, I stole a few quiet minutes with them for some portraits in the garden. Those short little windows are often all you need.

It has the feel of a wooden-framed greenhouse, with beams and transparent walls and roof panels that let light pour through the whole space. On this day, with all the floral styling and the summer heat, it felt bright, airy and full of energy.
The flowers across the day helped tie everything together beautifully and added to that proper summer wedding feel. Even before the party really got going, the room already had a fantastic atmosphere.
Speeches, Laughter and That Slightly Tipsy Sweet Spot
There were four or five speeches, and every one of them brought a lot of laughter. By that point in the day, I think it is fair to say people were nicely warmed up, not just by the temperature but also by a few drinks, and that only made the room feel even more lively.
This part of the day had such a good balance. It was emotional in places, funny in others, and just full of the kind of reactions that make wedding storytelling so enjoyable to photograph.
Golden Hour by the River and the Unexpected Pub Applause
Later on, once the sun had dropped lower, we headed out behind the venue for a few golden hour portraits. Just beyond the wedding venue there is a river and a lovely metal bridge, and it gave us a completely different backdrop for a short portrait session.
One of my favourite frames from that time is of Abbie and Alex standing on the bridge while swans drift underneath them. It looked beautiful and felt like one of those little unplanned bonuses that make a wedding gallery even more special.
On the way back, we passed a local pub garden, and Abbie and Alex got a full round of applause from the people sitting outside. It was such a fun moment, totally unexpected, and it gave them both a massive smile. On the way back, we also made the most of that flower-lined path again, this time with softer evening light, and it gave us even more lovely portraits among the purple blooms.

Later in the evening came the cutting of what I can only describe as the leaning tower of wedding cake. After surviving the hottest part of the day, it was finally time for it to do its job.
Then came the first dance and the start of the party, and honestly, the dancing was brilliant. Everyone threw themselves into it. The mix of the light coming through the greenhouse-style space, the warm evening atmosphere and the pure energy on the dancefloor made this part of the day feel really special.
It was one of those weddings where the evening did not slow down the story at all. It just gave it a different kind of magic.
