Deighton Lodge Wedding Lorna & Mick’s Beautiful Barn Wedding Near York

If you are planning a Deighton Lodge wedding, Lorna and Mick’s day is such a lovely example of how personal, relaxed and full of character a wedding at this venue can be. Their wedding took place on 2nd August 2025 and was one of those days that kept getting better as it went on.

When I first arrived that morning, the weather felt very typically British for August. It was cool, a bit grey and not exactly the kind of start that fills you with confidence for outdoor portraits later on. But as the day unfolded, the clouds cleared, the sunshine came through and by the evening we were rewarded with beautiful warm light and a gorgeous sunset over the open countryside.

That setting is one of the things I really liked about this venue from the start. Deighton Lodge sits away from the busier parts of York, surrounded by fields and open space, which gives the whole day a relaxed countryside feel while still being close enough to York for guests. It is easy to see why it works so well as a rustic barn wedding venue. The venue itself is designed for couples who want something personal and bespoke rather than a standard hotel-style wedding, and that came through beautifully in Lorna and Mick’s day.

A wedding full of books, family and personality

Before the wedding, Lorna and Mick described themselves in such a simple but lovely way. They had been together for four years and shared a love of books, music and food. They love theatre, meals out, gigs and spending time together, and with six children between them, family life is always full and busy. That strong sense of family and personality really ran through the whole day.

More than anything, this wedding felt personal. Nothing about it felt copied from somewhere else. It felt like them.

Books played a huge part in the styling and details, and that was one of the standout things about the whole wedding. Lorna had lovingly created so much of the décor herself, and you could really feel the care that had gone into it. There were folded book sculptures, paper flowers, stacks of books used as part of the styling, handmade decorations and little details everywhere that tied the whole theme together.

It was creative, thoughtful and different in the best way.

A warm welcome at Deighton Lodge Wedding

This was my first time photographing a wedding at Deighton Lodge, so as I drove there that morning I was genuinely curious to see how the venue would look and feel in real life. I have worked at a few barn venues before, and not all of them are easy from a photography point of view. Some can be very dark, some can be awkward to shoot in, and some just do not flow especially well.

Thankfully, Deighton Lodge was a really nice surprise.

Not only did the venue have lovely surroundings and loads of open space for portraits later in the day, but I was also made to feel really welcome from the start. The venue team were so lovely, and Sally and Angie in particular were brilliant. It honestly makes such a difference when you arrive somewhere new and are welcomed in such a warm and relaxed way. I cannot wait to work with them again.

A calm morning and emotional moments before the ceremony

After parking up, one of the first people I spotted was Mick. He was still outside adding some final decorations near the entrance to the wedding space, which already told me a lot about the day ahead. This was clearly going to be a wedding where the couple had put real thought and effort into making everything feel personal. He looked excited, full of energy and ready for the day.

Lorna’s morning was calm and intimate, surrounded by the people closest to her. She was with a few girls, her mum, her daughter and her sister, and the whole atmosphere felt warm rather than hectic. The most emotional moments came when she read a letter from Mick before the ceremony. That brought a few tears, and later there was another lovely emotional moment when her dad saw her properly ready for the day.

Meanwhile, the boys kept things simple. Mick and his best man got ready together upstairs, and I popped in for a short while to photograph them. One thing I really liked was their suits. They had gone for lighter-coloured suits, which felt fresh and different from the usual darker look and suited the style of the day really well.

Lorna had also given Mick a gift to open that morning, and very fittingly it was a set of three George Orwell books.

Handmade details that made the whole wedding feel special

One of my favourite things about this wedding was how much of it had clearly been made with love. Lorna’s handmade décor gave the whole venue such a unique feel and turned the barn into something that felt really personal and creative.

There were folded books showing their wedding date, sculpted book art, flowers made from pages, pastel book stacks, dramatic darker details, and styling that mixed romance with a slightly quirky edge. Some of the décor even had a subtle gothic or dark-humour feel to it, with little skeleton figures and black details mixed in with the flowers and candles.

It was playful, original and full of personality.

This is exactly the sort of thing that makes a wedding gallery feel different from the next one. You could tell these details were not there just because they looked nice. They meant something to the couple.

A ceremony with lovely warm light inside the barn

One of the things I had wondered about before arriving was how the ceremony light would be inside the barn. Some barns can be a bit tricky, but this one actually worked really nicely. The ceremony space gave us warm, flattering light and created a lovely atmosphere for the vows and the quieter moments.

That is something that matters more than people often realise when choosing a wedding venue in York or nearby. Of course the look of the venue matters, but the way it feels and the way the light works throughout the day can make a huge difference too.

The barn here had character without feeling too dark, and it suited the whole tone of the wedding really well.

Speeches, sunshine and a very different kind of wedding bingo

Later in the day there were speeches, and one of the standout ones came from Lorna’s dad. It had everyone laughing and gave me some really great candid moments to photograph.

By the time guests were outside enjoying the garden, the day had properly warmed up and the atmosphere was brilliant. This was where the wedding really showed even more of Lorna and Mick’s personality.

There was an ice cream cart, which was such a good shout for a warm summer wedding, and there was also one of the most unexpected wedding activities I have seen in a while: wedding bingo.

At first, I will be honest, I thought bingo at a wedding sounded like it could go either very well or very badly. But this was not your usual bingo at all. Instead of random numbers, the card was full of things connected to Lorna and Mick’s life, favourite places, food, travel and memories. They stood in the middle of the garden, told stories and little anecdotes, and guests had to work out which thing each story referred to.

It was funny, personal and actually a really good laugh.

That sort of detail made the wedding feel even more like them, and it also gave everyone something different to get involved in.

Heart-shaped sunglasses, live music and relaxed portraits

After the bingo, we grabbed some fun portraits of Lorna and Mick wearing heart-shaped sunglasses, which felt very them and looked great in the gallery. They were not trying to be too serious or too polished all day long, and that relaxed energy always helps.

A lot of couples worry that they will feel awkward in front of the camera, but relaxed portraits are usually much easier when the day already feels this natural and fun. If that is something you are thinking about too, you can also read my tips on how to look natural in wedding photos.

There was also live music from Noah Clegg, who brought a really lovely atmosphere to the day. The guests clearly loved it, and it added even more to that warm, laid-back summer wedding vibe.

Later on, I took Lorna and Mick out towards the entrance and the surrounding fields for some portraits. There is an old tractor by the entrance with the venue sign, which made a fun little detail for photos, and the wider setting around the venue gave us loads of space and a proper countryside feel.

The black dress surprise

One of the biggest surprises of the day came later on.

After we had done some portraits outside, Lorna disappeared to get changed, and what happened next definitely caught people off guard. She came back wearing a second dress for the evening, and it was black.

Most of the guests did not know about it, and neither did Mick.

It was such a brilliant moment. Everyone’s faces said it all, and it worked perfectly with the darker, slightly gothic touches that had already been woven through the styling. It felt bold, stylish and completely unexpected, but it also fitted the whole look of the wedding surprisingly well.

When she stepped onto the dancefloor in that black dress for their first dance, it was one of those proper wow moments.

A sweet table, Star Wars details and mashed potato martinis

This wedding had loads of fun little details, and the food side of the evening definitely had its own personality too.

One of the cakes on the sweet table had Lego Star Wars figures on top, including Darth Vader and a Stormtrooper, which was such a fun touch. There was also a very creative savoury “wedding cake” made from stacked wheels of cheese instead of a traditional wedding cake.

And later in the evening there was a mashed potato station called Maschtini, served in martini glasses with different toppings. It was quirky, different and definitely memorable.

Again, it all added to the feeling that this was not a wedding built from a template. It was full of things the couple genuinely loved.

Sunset portraits to end the day

After the first dance, I took Lorna and Mick out one more time while the sun was dropping lower. By then the weather had completely turned around from the grey start we had in the morning, and we got some beautiful evening light.

That final portrait session gave us some of my favourite images of the day. The warm countryside light, the open space around the venue and Lorna’s black evening dress all came together in a way that felt really cinematic.

For me, the best galleries are always the ones that feel personal and honest, and this wedding was full of those kinds of moments. If you love this kind of approach, you might also enjoy reading more about natural wedding photos.

It was the perfect ending to a wedding that had already been full of personality, emotion and brilliant little surprises.
