Hotel du Vin York Wedding – Callum & Harriet’s Stylish City Wedding
Callum and Harriet’s wedding at Hotel du Vin York was one of those days that felt stylish, intimate and full of lovely little moments from start to finish. It took place on 11th April 2024 and, looking back now, it feels like the perfect wedding to share as their second anniversary comes around.
The two of them described themselves as laid-back people who simply wanted their closest family and friends to have fun, make memories and enjoy the day together. That really sums up the whole atmosphere of this wedding. Nothing felt forced. Nothing felt too formal. It was just a beautiful celebration in the heart of York, surrounded by the people who mattered most.
A Stylish Start at Hotel du Vin York
This was my first time photographing a Hotel du Vin York wedding, so I was curious to see what the venue would be like in person. Straight away, it felt different in a really good way. The hotel sits very close to one of the main historic gates into York’s old city, which already gives it a great location if you want a city wedding with plenty of character nearby.
The venue itself has its own strong style too. Outside, there is a vintage van converted into a coffee van, which adds a bit of personality before you even walk through the door. Inside, the rooms are full of colour, patterned wallpaper and details that make the hotel feel unique rather than generic. It is the kind of place that suits couples who want something intimate and stylish without losing warmth.
A Morning Full of Emotion and Family Moments
From the start of the morning, Harriet’s room was full of positive energy. There were loads of smiles, plenty of excitement and a few emotional moments too. One of the most touching details from the morning was a gift Harriet gave to her grandma: a framed photo from her grandparents’ own wedding day. That was such a lovely personal touch and one of those moments that says a lot about the kind of day this was.
Their daughter Neave, who was nearly two at the time, completely stole the show more than once that morning. She brought that lovely unpredictable energy that little kids always bring to weddings, and it added even more personality to the story of the day.
I also loved how practical Harriet was. Alongside her wedding shoes, she had brought a second pair for later in the day and for walking through York. They were personalised Converse with Mrs Walls stitched on the back, which felt like such a fun and smart choice for a city wedding.
An Intimate Ceremony with Beautiful Natural Light
The ceremony room at Hotel du Vin worked really well for this wedding. It had lots of greenery and a glass roof, which let in plenty of natural light. On a bright midday summer day that could have been tricky, but because the weather was cloudy, the light stayed soft and even throughout the ceremony. From a photography point of view, it was ideal.
This venue felt especially well suited to a smaller wedding. There were 38 guests, and that number filled the room beautifully without making it feel overcrowded. It created exactly the kind of atmosphere Callum and Harriet wanted, intimate, relaxed and focused on the people closest to them.
One of my favourite moments from the whole ceremony came during the first kiss, when little Neave was holding Harriet’s hand. It was one of those tiny unscripted moments that made the images feel even more meaningful.
Why Hotel du Vin Works So Well for Smaller Weddings in York
One thing that stood out to me during this day was how well the venue suited a smaller celebration. If you are looking at weddings in York and want something stylish without needing a huge guest list, this venue really makes sense.
It has enough personality to feel special, but it also keeps everything close and connected. That can make a massive difference to the feel of a wedding day. Guests stay together, the day flows more easily, and the whole thing feels more personal.
For couples wanting a wedding that feels intimate, elegant and right in the heart of the city, I can definitely see why this would be a great option.
A Walk Through York for Wedding Portraits
After the ceremony, confetti and some family photos, we had time for one of the most memorable parts of the day, taking Callum and Harriet into York for portraits.
That is what makes this wedding stand out so much from a lot of other venue-based blog posts. It was not just a hotel wedding. It also turned into a proper York city wedding story, with portraits through the old streets and historic parts of the city.
York is always busy, and that definitely added to the experience. People congratulated them from the street, car windows opened with happy shouts, and there was a real sense that the whole city was joining in for a moment. It was busy, slightly chaotic at times, but also really fun.
Our first goal was to get a shot near the main historic gate into the city. I wanted a frame of Callum leading Harriet by the hand across the crossing with the old gate in the background. It took a fair few attempts because there were always cars, pedestrians or something else getting in the way, but in the end we got it.
Portraits on the York City Walls and Historic Streets
From there, we headed up onto the old city walls and took a few portraits there too. One of the highlights was finding a spot where York Minster could be seen in the background. We did not walk all the way to the Minster itself, as the couple quite rightly did not want to spend too long away from their guests, but we still managed to bring a bit of York’s iconic skyline into the gallery.
After coming down from the walls, we wandered through part of the old city and used some of York’s historic streets as a backdrop. The old timber-framed buildings worked beautifully in the photos and gave the whole portrait session even more character.

Relaxed Reactions, Speeches and a Great Evening Atmosphere
Back at the venue, the ceremony room had been turned around for the reception, and the day moved naturally into speeches, food and the evening celebrations. There were some really lovely reactions during the speeches, and that helped keep the emotional, family-focused feel of the day going.
That balance of emotion and fun is always what makes a wedding feel complete. You want the day to look beautiful, of course, but the real magic is usually in the reactions, laughter and little interactions between people.

Cake, First Dance and Smoke Bomb Photos to Finish
Later in the evening came the cake cutting, first dance and party. Everyone was clearly having a brilliant time, and the atmosphere stayed fun and relaxed right through the evening.
Before I packed up for the night, we headed outside one more time and used smoke bombs together with the best man and maid of honour. By then it was already dark, so I added a bit of flash lighting to create something more playful and dramatic. It gave us a few fun final frames and was a really nice way to end the day.
Final Thoughts on This Hotel du Vin York Wedding
Callum and Harriet’s Hotel du Vin York wedding was intimate, stylish and full of real moments. It had emotional family details, a lovely relaxed ceremony and one of the best city portrait walks I have done in York.
What made it stand out most was the combination of two things: a stylish hotel venue and the character of York itself. That mix gave the day a completely different feel from a countryside or barn wedding, and it worked beautifully for them.
For couples planning a Hotel du Vin York wedding or looking for a wedding photographer in York, this day is a lovely reminder that you do not need a huge wedding to create something meaningful, beautiful and full of personality.
