Buile Hill Mansion Wedding – Elena & William’s Spring Wedding in Salford

A Buile Hill Mansion wedding can look very different from the traditional big celebration built around a packed timeline, a huge party and a dance floor that doesn’t stop until midnight.

Elena and William’s wedding certainly did.

Their wedding on 18th April 2026 was intimate, relaxed and focused much more on spending time with the people closest to them. There was no DJ, no band and not even a traditional first dance.

There was, however, a horse-drawn carriage, a harpist, a pug in wedding attire, spring sunshine, a black wedding dress and one of Salford’s newest wedding venues.

And somehow, all of that felt completely them.

Meeting Elena & William Before Their Buile Hill Mansion Wedding

I’d actually met Elena and William in person a few weeks before the wedding.

We arranged their pre-wedding shoot in the Peak District and started, as all good meetings should, with a coffee.

It gave us a chance to sit down, talk through the wedding plans and get to know each other properly before heading outside for a short shoot.

It was one of those early spring days where the sun is out but the wind definitely hasn’t received the memo that winter is supposed to be over.

And Elena and William turned up looking exactly like themselves – leather jackets, relaxed, slightly rock’n’roll and accompanied by a little pug called Remi, who very quickly decided he was going to be part of the photos too.

Honestly, he fitted the shoot perfectly.

The whole thing was relaxed, we got some brilliant photographs, and most importantly, by the time the wedding came around we weren’t strangers anymore.

That’s one of the things I love about doing pre-wedding shoots. You get the awkward first five minutes in front of a camera out of the way weeks before the actual wedding.

When I arrived on the morning of 18th April, it simply felt like I was meeting them again.

If you’re planning your own pre-wedding shoot, I’ve also put together a few tips on what to wear for engagement photos.

A Quiet Wedding Morning at Home

My day started at Elena’s home, where she was getting ready with her mum.

There wasn’t a room full of bridesmaids running around or a huge morning schedule to manage. It was just Elena, her mum, Remy and a rather elderly cat quietly supervising proceedings from the house.

The atmosphere was calm from the moment I arrived.

Hair and make-up were being finished, the dress was waiting and I could concentrate on documenting all the small things happening around me rather than trying to manufacture moments.

There was also a funny coincidence.

The woman doing Elena’s hair and make-up turned out to be Polish.

So, Ewa Allen – if you’re reading this, pozdrawiam!

Elena has Spanish roots, while William is British, and from what I remember they originally met while working together in London. William was actually Elena’s manager at the time.

Considering they were about to get married, I had a feeling the management structure might be changing slightly from this point onwards…

Once Elena was ready, I left ahead of her and made my way to Buile Hill Mansion in Salford to meet William and photograph the guests arriving.

Elena had slightly more impressive transport.

A white horse-drawn carriage pulled by black horses.

For a bride with her style, it somehow made complete sense.

Photographing One of the First Weddings at Buile Hill Mansion

This was my first time photographing a wedding at Buile Hill Mansion.

When I arrived, I was told something I really wasn’t expecting – Elena and William’s celebration was only the second wedding to be held there since the venue reopened for weddings.

That made the day feel a little bit special from my side of the camera too.

I wasn’t walking into a venue where I’d photographed twenty weddings before and already knew every corner.

Everything was new.

I could explore it for the first time, look at where the light was coming from and start working out where I could create photographs later in the day.

And my first impression was very good.

The ceremony room in particular is incredibly photographer-friendly.

It’s bright, with light walls and plenty of windows bringing natural light into the room. There is a window behind the couple from certain angles, which can make things slightly trickier photographically, but because there is so much additional light coming into the room it works surprisingly well.

William was already there waiting in a brilliant black suit while the guests took their seats.

Then we heard that Elena had arrived.

An Intimate Ceremony with Live Harp Music

Elena and William kept their ceremony fairly intimate, with around 40 of their closest family members and friends there to watch them get married.

The harpist playing during the ceremony added something really lovely to the atmosphere without making it feel overly formal.

Then Elena walked in.

After the vows, rings, a few laughs and the first kiss, the newlyweds made their way back down the aisle together.

Before everyone disappeared outside, I stole them for literally a couple of minutes.

There was a beautiful area by the large window at the end of the ceremony room and the light was too good not to use, so we made a handful of portraits there while everyone else started making their way outside.

Nothing complicated.

Just the two of them, a beautiful room and great natural light.

Then it was time for confetti.

Confetti, Family Photographs and a Horse-Drawn Carriage

Everyone gathered outside the mansion for the confetti photographs, followed by a few family and group shots.

I’m never interested in turning this part of a wedding into a 45-minute photoshoot. Get the important people together, make the photographs and let everyone get back to enjoying themselves.

More importantly, Elena and William still had their carriage waiting outside.

So obviously we had to use it.

We made portraits around the carriage, with the horses and inside it before Elena and William climbed aboard and disappeared for a short ride together.

I actually loved that part of their timeline.

For ten minutes or so there were no guests, no photographer and nothing they needed to do.

They could just sit together and realise:

we’re married.

When they returned, we headed into Buile Hill Park for another short walk.

Spring Wedding Photography in Buile Hill Park

If you’re considering a spring wedding at Buile Hill Mansion, the park surrounding it is probably one of the biggest advantages of getting married here.

In April, everything was beginning to come alive.

There were areas filled with spring flowers, fresh green leaves appearing on the trees and colour everywhere you looked.

We didn’t need to go searching for complicated locations or drive somewhere else for photographs. We simply walked away from the mansion together.

And then we found this tree.

I’m fairly sure it was a flowering cherry, although I’m a wedding photographer rather than a botanist, so don’t hold me to that.

Whatever it was, it was covered in pink blossom.

Perfect.

We stopped there for a few minutes, made some portraits and then headed back towards the mansion to join everyone else.

This is generally how I like couple sessions to work during a wedding.

Ten minutes here. Another ten minutes later.

No disappearing for an hour while your guests wonder where you’ve gone.

A Relaxed Wedding Breakfast at Buile Hill Mansio

Back inside, everyone settled into a relaxed cocktail hour around the bar.

This also gave me a chance to properly see the room prepared for the wedding breakfast.

And it impressed me.

Like the ceremony space, the room feels bright and fresh. There are windows bringing in plenty of natural light, a skylight above, beautiful chandeliers and soft, neutral colours throughout.

For photography, that’s exactly what I want.

Dark wedding venues can look incredible in person but become much more challenging once you’re trying to photograph speeches, reactions and all the little interactions happening between tables.

Here, the light does a lot of the work for you.

After the couple’s entrance came the speeches, plenty of laughter and time around the tables.

And that really summed up this wedding.

Elena and William hadn’t designed the day around entertaining 150 people every minute.

It was about being with their family and friends.

There wasn’t a huge evening production waiting afterwards.

No DJ.

No band.

Not even a first dance.

And they didn’t need one.

Getting Creative on the Buile Hill Mansion Staircase

After the cake cutting, I started thinking about what we could do instead.

I’d noticed the staircase earlier in the day.

The symmetry immediately caught my attention, and now that we had a little time I wanted to use it properly.

This was the complete opposite of the photographs we’d made in the park earlier.

Instead of relying entirely on the available light, I brought out my flashes and coloured gels and started playing.

We created several portraits using the symmetry of the staircase, mixing flash with the natural light coming through the window.

That’s one of my favourite parts of photographing a wedding somewhere new.

You arrive without a catalogue of photographs you’ve already made there.

You have to look.

Find the light.

Find the shapes.

And work out what you can create with what’s in front of you.

But we weren’t finished yet.

Outside, the light was beginning to change.

And Remi was back.

Golden Hour… with a Pug

Someone brought Remi back to the venue towards the end of the day.

And he had dressed for the occasion.

He was wearing what can only really be described as the dog version of a shirt and tie.

Absolutely brilliant.

The sun was getting lower, so we headed into the private garden behind the mansion for another short set of photographs.

This time, the three of them.

The light was beautiful, everything in the garden was beginning to bloom and Remi – already a veteran of our Peak District pre-wedding shoot – knew exactly what was expected of him.

Well…

As much as any pug ever does.

Those photographs became another little connection between their pre-wedding shoot and the wedding itself.

But Elena still had one surprise left.

From a White Wedding Dress to Black

At the very end of the day, Elena disappeared to get changed.

She’d spent the wedding in a traditional white wedding dress.

She came back wearing black.

Black dress.

Leather jacket.

And I remember her saying something along the lines of:

“Now I finally feel like myself.”

There she was.

The Elena I’d first met in the Peak District.

It was such a perfect way to finish their gallery that there was no chance I was putting the cameras away yet.

The sun was dropping behind the park, so we headed outside one last time.

We used the road in front of Buile Hill Mansion, the surrounding trees and the last bit of evening light to create the final portraits of the day.

No big finale.

No packed dance floor.

Just Elena and William walking through the park together as the sun went down.

And honestly, I don’t think their wedding needed anything else.

A Buile Hill Mansion Wedding That Felt Like Them

What I’ll remember most about Elena and William’s wedding isn’t one particular photograph.

It’s how little of the day felt like it had been done simply because “that’s what you’re supposed to do at a wedding.” It’s exactly why I love candid wedding photography – letting couples enjoy their day in their own way and photographing the real moments that happen along the way.

They kept the people they loved close.

They brought their dog.

They arrived by horse and carriage.

They skipped the DJ and the first dance.

And when Elena had finished being a bride in white, she put on a black dress and leather jacket because that felt more like her.

That’s exactly what weddings should be allowed to look like.

And for my first Buile Hill Mansion wedding, I couldn’t really have asked for a better introduction to the venue.

Having been told on the day that this was only the second wedding celebration there since its reopening made it even more interesting to photograph. Buile Hill Mansion was new to weddings, it was new to me, and I got to discover it at the same time as I documented Elena and William’s story.

From the bright ceremony room and elegant staircase to the gardens, blossom and huge park surrounding the mansion, there’s a lot here for a photographer to work with.

And now that I’ve photographed a full wedding there, I’ve got quite a few thoughts for anyone considering getting married at Buile Hill Mansion.

But I’ll save those for another post.

Congratulations again, Elena & William.

And Remi, obviously. 🐾
