Blackwell Grange Wedding – Lucy & Matty’s Sunny March Wedding
Lucy and Matty’s Blackwell Grange wedding took place on 8th March 2025, and even though it was still early in the year, the day came with beautiful sunshine, relaxed energy and a brilliant evening atmosphere.
They had been together for five years by March 2025 and first met while serving in the Army. By the time of the wedding they had both left, but that shared part of their story was still a special part of who they were. Alongside travelling around Asia, music, food and competing with their dogs in flyball, it was clear from the start that this was a couple who wanted a wedding that felt fun, personal and properly them.
A relaxed wedding morning with lovely emotional moments
The morning felt calm and easy from the beginning. Lucy was getting ready with her mum and her maid of honour, Becca, while Matty kept things simple with just his best man. There was no huge crowd, no chaos, and no pressure, just a really nice atmosphere with plenty of smiles.
One of the best moments from the morning came when Lucy’s dad saw her for the first time. At first he looked all smiles, but that quickly turned into tears of happiness, and those are always the moments that stay with you.
The couple had also exchanged gifts before the ceremony, which added another lovely personal touch to the start of the day.
Why Blackwell Grange worked so well for this wedding
This was my first time photographing a Blackwell Grange wedding, and I’d happily go back. The venue has a lot going for it visually. Blackwell Grange says it hosts only one wedding per day, and offers both the recently renovated Bruhenny Suite and the George Allan Suite, with direct garden access and views across the South Terrace.
For Lucy and Matty’s day, the ceremony space looked especially good. The venue describes the Bruhenny Suite as a bright and airy room full of natural light, and that absolutely came through in person. The large Victorian-style windows brought in loads of light, which gave the ceremony a beautiful feel and also helped create a lovely contrast between the couple and the rest of the room.
The other standout feature for me was the staircase inside the venue. Blackwell Grange highlights a beautiful staircase leading to the transformed Bruhenny Bar, and it ended up being one of my favourite parts of the venue to use later for portraits.
A Blackwell Grange Wedding Ceremony Full of Light
The ceremony itself had loads of nice natural light and plenty of atmosphere. The one small downside was that the midday sun came straight through one of the main windows and hit Lucy’s dress, which caused a bright blown-out patch on the fabric. So if I had one little tip for future couples getting married there, I’d say that a slightly earlier or slightly later ceremony time could help avoid that on a very sunny day.
One of the most memorable moments came when Lucy and Matty’s two greyhounds helped bring the rings in. That instantly made the ceremony even more personal and gave everyone a moment to smile. Then, after the vows and first kiss, there was a funny little moment when the couple tried to do a dip walking back down the aisle, only to turn the wrong way for my camera. Everyone laughed, they reset, and then we got it properly, with the dogs too.
Confetti, portraits and spring sunshine in the gardens
After the ceremony we headed outside for confetti, and the sunshine was strong enough that everyone definitely felt it. We kept the family group photos fairly quick, but the gardens gave us some lovely options. The pergola was especially useful as a backdrop for a few family shots and portraits with the dogs, and I also took Lucy and Matty to the main entrance for a few more portraits with and without them.
Because the weather was so good for March, cocktail hour happened outside, which always helps the whole day feel more open and relaxed.

Golden hour, creative staircase portraits and a proper evening party
Later in the day we had speeches, which gave me a few really strong reaction shots, and then we made the most of the light again with a short golden hour session. I also captured one drone image showing the venue, the pergola and the couple walking across the lawn, which gave the gallery something a bit different.
Before the party properly kicked off, we also used the staircase for some more creative portraits, this time with coloured gels on flash, which looked great against the symmetry of the space.
Then came the cake cutting, first dance and a seriously fun evening. Lucy was going so hard on the dancefloor that her dress actually split under the arm, which obviously got a lot of laughs. The evening entertainment also included casino tables from Bond Parties, which added something a bit different and gave guests another way to enjoy the night. On the dancefloor people were waving glowing foam batons around and the whole thing had a proper party feel.

One last portrait under the stars
Before I finished for the night, I took Lucy and Matty back outside one more time to the pergola. Using flash, I created one final portrait with the couple framed there under the clear night sky. It was a really strong way to end the gallery and one of those shots that feels like a proper full stop to the day.
Final thoughts on this Blackwell Grange wedding
Lucy and Matty’s Blackwell Grange wedding was full of sunshine, emotion, personality and a really good evening atmosphere. It had relaxed preparations, a light-filled ceremony, dogs carrying the rings, lovely portraits around the venue and a genuinely brilliant party to finish it all off.
For couples planning a Blackwell Grange Hotel wedding, it is easy to see the appeal. The venue offers bright ceremony spaces, garden access, elegant interiors and enough variety to create a gallery that feels full without needing to go far. Blackwell Grange says the George Allan Suite opens directly to the gardens and gazebo, while both main wedding spaces overlook the South Terrace, which fits really well with how versatile the venue felt on the day.
